What to do after a car accident

The steps you take in the first few days can make a big difference to your health and any claim. Use this checklist.

At the scene

  1. Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
  2. Move to safety if you can.
  3. Call the police and get the report number.
  4. Exchange names, insurance and license plate details.
  5. Photograph vehicles, damage, the scene, road conditions and injuries.
  6. Get contact details for witnesses.
  7. Don’t argue about fault or apologize.

In the next few days

  1. See a doctor, even if you feel fine: some injuries show up later.
  2. Notify your own insurer.
  3. Be careful with the other driver’s insurer; you don’t have to give a recorded statement.
  4. Keep a folder of bills, receipts and missed-work records.
